From the Pastor's Pen (from the August newsletter)
FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN
From a vision conceived in the hearts of men before 1900 to meet together for prayer, worship and fellowship, in a small community came the humble beginnings of Hillside Baptist Church. Here we are, 107 years later celebrating the life and ministry of this church. Of course we know the church is not made of brick and wood but of people. Many things have changed in 107 years yet it appears to me, as pastor for over 16 years, that the spirit and love that existed in those days, still exists today.
It reminds me of the verse in Acts 4:32, “Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul…” While no congregation of people ever see things exactly alike because of different opinions, they can have a unity that exists within the fellowship of believers. This unity is only possible as a congregation seeks to follow God’s will. It was from much prayer and study that we established our vision and purpose. So, we as the people of Hillside are “seeking to put God first…”(Matt. 6:33). Our purpose statement is “To allow God to draw us into a love relationship with Him first, and to a love relationship with our fellow people second, working together to accomplish His purpose bringing glory to Him.”
The secret to growth and life is the involvement of the people engaged in meaningful ministry everywhere they may be. Our mission field is before our eyes, because everyday we come in contact with people who need Jesus. As our people are encouraged and excited about what God is doing in our worship and fellowship, it becomes contagious to others. As the various members of this body work together, the body moves forward in kingdom work. The more you become involved in the ministry of the church, the more meaningful church becomes to you.
No one wants to be a part of just “going through the motion of doing something religious.” Intentional ministry motivates people and creates a sense of belonging to the family of God. Come join us as we worship and celebrate 107 years of ministry on August 15, 2010!
See you Sunday,
